Job Duties

THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR ODRC EMPLOYEES ONLY.

What You'll Do:

Supervises correction officers (CO's) and Correction Sergeants/Counselors assigned to one or more posts/areas or special duty (e.g. tool control, armory, count office, mail room, transportation, visitation)

Instructs and evaluates CO's

Assigns staff to posts

Enforces post orders assignments

Ensures CO's and correction sergeants/counselors are alert, attentive and properly placed at their respective posts by inspecting each post

Enforces the utilization of body worn cameras with CO's and ensures the proper utilization of body scanners on the incarcerated population

Conducts surveillance security of institution and property

Prevents escapes, apprehends escapees, and/or prevents incidents which threaten the security and safety of the facility/incarcerated population/staff or general public which includes when necessary using physical force, unarmed self-defense, firearms and/or other force to detain or secure incarcerated persons

Makes constant rounds to inspect cells, shops, recreation areas, and dining rooms for cleanliness, compliance with safety regulations, possible contraband and general security

Monitors and directs custody operations during movement of inmates to meals, infirmary, schools, worksites, and other locations

Attends monthly unit meetings and assists the Correction Specialist in supervising Correction Officers in the unit in accordance with the unit plan

Assists in supervising and/or arranging for the supervision of meaningful activities

Assists in the development and enforcement of memorandums of understanding between service departments and the units; responds to the concerns of staff

Ensures the availability and utilization of personnel protective equipment (PPE) for Correction Officers

Responds to the needs of incarcerated persons

Manages disputes and seeks resolution involving incarcerated population and reports complaints of abuse by employees

Participates in team approach to unit planning, operation and problem solving; responds to emergencies and security alerts

Gathers information and writes reports covering accidents, fires, and employee and inmate's disciplinary actions

Completes employee and incarcerated worker performance evaluations

Schedules work assignments, population bed movement, meals, educational and recreational activities

Serves on rules infraction board or other committees as required

Ensures safety and security of equipment and supplies (e.g., radios, vehicles, restraint devices, body worn cameras, body scanners, mailroom scanner, computers)

Makes periodic rounds

Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.; 2 yrs. trg. or 2 yrs. exp. in enforcement of security measures for detention of felons or consumers who are criminally insane in controlled environment; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in supervisory principles/techniques or providing work direction & training to other employees. if assigned to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of revised code, applicants must also have commercial driver's license.

-Or high school diploma or G.E.D.; 12 mos. exp. as Correction Sergeant/ Counselor, 46532. If assigned to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of revised code, applicants must also have commercial driver's license.

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
