Position Summary :

The main purpose of the Police Corporal and the University Police department is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of UNC Asheville through law enforcement and crime prevention. The Police Corporal must possess knowledge and skills in the following areas: patrol operations, investigations, leadership and supervision, community policing, and communication skills.

In addition to upholding local, state, and federal laws, the Police Corporal will respond to and investigate crimes and accidents, as well as perform administrative tasks, provide training, and perform other specialized roles as designated by the department.

The Police Corporal will serve in an assistant supervisor capacity and will assist with supervision within the University Police department. This includes managing schedules to ensure growth and adequate staffing, reinforcing established work expectations, providing officer and scene management guidance, directing resources in support of department goals, evaluating performance, conducting shift briefings, reviewing reports completed during a shift, interpreting laws and policies, line and equipment inspections, and aiding in yearly performance evaluations.

In the absence of the Police Sergeant, the Police Corporal will serve as the acting supervisor. The Corporal is responsible for general call response and police duties during their regularly assigned shift.

This position description outlines the duties and responsibilities applicable to the Assistant Police Supervisor I, II, III . Designation as Assistant Police Supervisor I, II, III will be assessed based on overall experience, education, and certifications.

Minimum Education/Experience/Skill :

Assistant Police Supervisor I: A minimum of an associate degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 2 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.

Assistant Police Supervisor II : 3 years of experience as an Assistant Police Supervisor with the agency. At the discretion of the hiring campus hiring authority, documented service as a sworn law enforcement officer at a substantially equivalent classification may be accepted for lateral hires from outside agencies. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.

Assistant Police Supervisor III: 6 years of experience as an Assistant Police Supervisor with the agency. At the discretion of the hiring campus hiring authority, documented service as a sworn law enforcement officer at a substantially equivalent classification may be accepted for lateral hires from outside agencies. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skill :

  • Possession of current NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer.
  • An associate degree or higher.
  • Two years of campus law enforcement experience or School Resource Officer.
  • Five or more years as a law enforcement officer with experience and training in police supervision.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Computer skills including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
  • Familiarity with University and law enforcement technology to include DCI, NCIC, eWarrants, eDiscovery, CJLEADS, Maxient, Banner, records management systems, security camera systems, etc.
  • Knowledge of the Clery Act.

Supervises daily operations of staff on assigned shifts, monitors schedules and prepares schedule of staff assignments, reviews and approves reports, conducts staff and line inspections, conducts shift briefings, and performs all duties assigned to a police officer as needed.

Counsel's employees on performance and areas for improvement. Makes recommendations for employee training, growth, and advancement. Supervises and monitors special events. Performs administrative and operational tasks. Completes internal incident and accident reports when necessary.

Serves as field training supervisor coordinating new employee training programs and provides roll call shift training.

The Police Corporal performs other assigned duties as requested.
