Summary:

The Police Sergeant is a sworn, commissioned University Special Police Officer, serving as a personnel and/or function supervisor in the Department of University Police. He/she supervises police officers that provide daily law enforcement services to the campus community. The Police Sergeant conducts aspects of assigned functions within the Department, such as police operations, investigations, property and evidence, training, crime prevention, victim assistance, special events and records management. The incumbent coordinates scheduling, work assignments and performance management. The Police Sergeant reviews and approves daily incident reports and coordinates incident response to emergencies on campus.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinate University Police functions.

  • Patrol incident response, initial investigations, crime scene response, traffic and parking code enforcement, and event security oversight.

  • Assumes incident command and coordinates the University Police response to emergency/critical incidents.

  • Actively participates on patrol during all three shifts on a regular basis.

  • Coordinates scheduling for patrol, investigators and special operations.

  • Reviews, edits and approves daily incident reports.

  • Verifies compliance with all applicable University and District of Columbia policies, regulations and laws.

  • Coordinates assigned University Police programs.

  • Police patrol operations, investigations, property and evidence, training, crime prevention, victim assistance, special events, records management, and/or other programs as assigned.

  • Ensures program compliance with University policy and District of Columbia law.

  • Collaborates with the Clery Act Coordinator to ensure program compliance with the Clery Act, Title IX and the Higher Education Opportunity Act.

  • Trains, supervises and evaluates assigned sworn and civilian personnel.

  • Manages the performance management process for assigned personnel, including evaluations, counseling and disciplinary matters.

  • Monitors compliance with all District of Columbia regulations for University Special Police Officers.

  • Implements training programs based on law enforcement best practices, for Police Officers, Investigators, and administrative staff, including field training, search & seizure, use of force, report writing, incident response and crime scene response.

  • Coordinates the tracking and retention of training records with other University Police units.

  • Maintains partnerships with University and community departments and agencies, such as Campus Life, Housing & Dining, Facilities Management, Metropolitan Police Department, DC Fire Department and Homeland Security.

  • Coordinates incident response with those entities.

  • Assists other University Police units with physical security planning, crime prevention projects and emergency preparedness programs.

  • Assesses purchase requests from subordinates; recommends police equipment purchases in coordination with the Quartermaster.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full-Time.

  • 40 hours per week.

  • Position is considered as essential personnel under the University Personnel policies.

  • Position is required to be able to work outside normal business hours to include nights and weekends.

Salary Range:

  • $38.71 - $40.47 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and/or a combination of training/education and experience which demonstrates the necessary skills.

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.

  • Prior experience as a sworn, uniformed officer and/or supervisor in a law enforcement agency.

  • Prior experience in a policing environment.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of community policing techniques (obtained via experience, education, and training), especially as it pertains to the university environment.

  • Knowledge of criminal law and procedure of the District of Columbia.

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population.

  • Must have demonstrated experience following and implementing policies and procedures.

  • Must be able to quickly evaluate critical situations and determine the appropriate response, as demonstrated through past law enforcement experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in the utilization of modern law enforcement supervisory strategies, operational and investigative techniques, and technological tools.

  • Must be able to possess and maintain a University Special Police Officer Commission or equivalent.

  • Successful completion of medical and psychiatric examinations.

  • Successful completion of initial, annual and random drug screens.

  • Must possess and maintain a current drivers license and successfully obtain the Universitys approval to drive University vehicles.

  • Must be able to maintain and possess certification from a recognized law enforcement-training academy or the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area Campus Public Safety Institute.

  • Must be able to maintain and possess all certifications that are required for uniformed officers.

  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of the laws of arrest, search, and seizure.
