Job Description:

Operates, monitors and controls Department of Public Safety communications within the university community; answers emergency and non-emergency phone calls; logs officer activity information into NexGen database; monitors CCTV system; issues authorized keys to students and staff; grants parking permits; assists with general needs of the department; and keeps abreast of dispatch-related internal/external procedures/regulation.

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS: This position requires working rotating shifts and schedules, including overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays. Employees must be able to remain in a stationary position (standing or sitting) for extended periods and report to work in various weather conditions. The role involves regular exposure to sensitive and confidential information, requiring discretion and professionalism. Occasional mandatory overtime may be required based on operational needs.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL NEEDED: Strong Communication and listening skills. Knowledge of general computer functions.

EDUCATION: High School Diploma

EXPERIENCE: Prior office, telecommunication or dispatch experience preferred. Computer entry expertise necessary.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Operates, monitors and controls Department of Public Safetys dispatching communications. This involves:

  • responding to routine and complex requests for public safety-related information

  • analyzing and routing requests to Public Safety Officers

  • dispatching, via radio, Public Safety Officers in response to requested service

  • communicating with Town of Fairfield FCRD via phone or radio

  • monitors, responds to and communicates via personal safety app

  • communicating, via radio or phone, with various university personnel

  • providing back-up service for Switchboard Department

  • preparing incident cards and inputting information into database

  • monitoring CCTV system

  • responds to requests from officers and performs services or provides information as requested

  • monitoring security and fire alarms and reporting any malfunctions.

  • maintain radio and phone communications

  • handle emergency and routine calls

  • track and log all officer activity

  • maintain CAD system (Computer Aided Dispatch)

  • monitor alarm system on campus

  • communicate with Town ECC (Emergency Operations Center)

  • monitor campus CCTV System

  • submit work orders

  • look up data as requested by officers

  • notify other departments of situations

  • maintain emergency contact information

  • work overtime as directed

Issues authorized keys to students and staff members following protocol. Issues parking permits, temporary parking passes and ticket appeal forms. Types reports and performs data entry of Public Safety codes and information and logs into a database program. Keeps abreast of Department of Public Safetys related internal procedures/regulations. This involves:

  • monitoring daily incidents,

  • informing officers and superiors of pertinent occurrences.

Participates in the professional development of the Department of Public Safety. This involves:

  • participating in staff meetings as requested,

  • promoting an image of efficiency and courtesy throughout the university community and consistent with the departments mission.

Promotes safe and secure working conditions. This involves:

  • promoting the proper utilization of equipment and materials,

  • immediately reporting any unsafe working conditions to supervisor.

Performs other related duties as directed or dictated by responsibilities. Answers university switchboard calls after hours.

This position is based at Fairfield Universitys Fairfield, CT campus.
